I clicked the light off and curled up in bed. When I noticed I had wrapped my arms around my shoulders I felt loved. Then I thought, How will I make each member of my family feel loved tomorrow morning and throughout the day? Instantly each person came to mind and I sent them love.

Action follows thought. I find the more I consciously cultivate loving thoughts the loving action flows a little more smoothly (no, not always).

Lately, I’ve been thinking of myself as a servant of love. By extension I’m a servant of relationships, or more specifically, a servant of the people whom I interact with. Mostly that’s my family, but my goal is to extend love, respect, and acceptance to everyone I come in contact with: friends, acquaintances, business partners, or strangers, wherever I meet them.

At first blush it’s a sentimental thought, unachievable and bothersome. Why add additional stress to my life? After all, relationships cause me the most stress and are the most unmanageable: people are unpredictable. But viewed in another light, the goal becomes an interesting prospect.

My effort is based on the principle that each person is a spiritual Being. When we exchange with another person we’re in direct communion with spirit.

Oh, I know how laughable and frightening that sounds. I didn’t say our relationships were spiritual or based on genuine love. I said they are connections with spirit—if we choose to engage with them on that level. We can’t control others, but we we can control our part of the interactions. And if we do, we can transform our lives into daily spiritual awakenings.

Of course this endeavor is difficult when dealing with those who don’t see themselves as Spirit, or are focused on meeting their own bodily or egoic needs. Even if the other person makes the same noble attempt we are, rising above our own issues is a challenge. All around the proposal is work. But there’s an additional principle at work to sweeten the transaction for us.

Each Soul is accompanied by Supersoul, or God in the heart. So each relationship or interaction is potentially a relationship and interaction directly with God. The whole spiritual sphere is within our reach by engaging in relationships with this understanding.

If our vision becomes saturated with this spiritual sense, each person offers an opportunity to exchange on the spiritual platform; every interaction with another a dance with divinity.

Life becomes a creative expression through relationships. We design the flow of our life, a step at a time. I’m thinking, How will I choreograph my next dance step?
