The Three Energies of Life: Love, Illusion, and the Soul

Discover the three fundamental energies described in Vedanta: Bhakti (divine love), Maya (illusion), and Atma (the soul). Learn how these forces shape our lives and how we can choose between illusion and illumination; entanglement or eternal joy. By recognizing these energies, we gain the ability to choose illumination over illusion and align ourselves with our eternal nature, discovering freedom, love, and spiritual joy.

The Three Energies Behind Everything

Understanding the Energies That Shape Life

What if everything you have ever felt, thought, longed for, or acted upon could be traced back to three energies at play within and around you? Vedanta teaches that life is governed by profound, interwoven forces: the power of love, the power of illusion, and the spark of the soul. In this episode, we will uncover these energies, identify our position in the grand tapestry of existence, and explore how we can consciously choose alignment with spiritual illumination rather than material illusion.

To begin, let us consider the nature of energy. Both science and Vedanta agree that energy is a fundamental aspect of creation. It is fundamental to each of us as well. Without energy, we cannot act, create, or experience. Our bodies produce energy that allows us to move, digest food, think, and perform every other activity of life. In this sense, we are not merely consumers of energy—we are energetic beings, a fount of vitality.

At a macrocosmic level, the principle remains: just as we generate energy, Super Consciousness is the ultimate source of all energies. The sun, moon, earth, water, and wind, as well as countless forms of energy identified by science—mechanical, thermal, nuclear, chemical, sonic, and electromagnetic—reflect the myriad ways energy manifests. Vedanta, however, offers a more nuanced perspective, identifying subtle energies of consciousness and existence.

The Shakti Triad: Love, Illusion, and the Soul

In Sanskrit, energy is called shakti, but this is more than a mechanical or physical concept. Shakti refers to the dynamic potency or power of a conscious being. The cells in our body produce physical energy, yet our body is energized by the soul—the shakti of consciousness itself. Similarly, the universe contains three primary energies, or potencies, foundational to all others:

Spiritual energy (Bhakti Shakti): the energy of divine love
Material energy (Maya Shakti): the energy of illusion and temporality
Intermediary energy (Jiva Shakti): the energy of the soul

Understanding these energies illuminates the hidden workings of the self, mind, and world. By seeing the interplay of these forces, we can withdraw the veil of illusion and recognize our own spiritual potential.

Analogies for Grasping Spiritual and Material Forces

Consider the sun as an analogy for Bhagavan, the Sweet Absolute. The sun has intrinsic heat and light, just as the Supreme has spiritual energy, or Bhakti Shakti. The rays of the sun represent the souls, sharing the same nature but in smaller portions. Just as rays depend on the sun, the soul is a conscious spark of the Supreme.

Clouds, however, are extrinsic to the sun and may obscure its light. In our analogy, clouds represent material energy, or Maya Shakti. Dense clouds block sunlight, creating darkness, just as material illusion clouds the soul’s perception of its eternal source. These clouds are temporary, transient, and illusory, in contrast to the eternal, blissful, and knowing spiritual energy.

Bhakti Shakti: The Power of Divine Love

Bhakti Shakti is intrinsic to the Supreme—it is divine love itself, the heart of the Absolute. Contact with this spiritual energy brings ecstasy and profound joy, nourishing all who partake of it. Bhakti is not just a concept; it is a living, dynamic power that cultivates divine relationships and awakens the soul to its true nature. Love is the essence of spiritual energy, eternal and blissful, and it offers a doorway to liberation.

Maya Shakti: The Power of Illusion

The second energy, Maya Shakti, is external or extrinsic. Like clouds that obscure sunlight, material energy is temporary and illusory. Contact with Maya leads the soul to identify with matter—ever-changing, inert, and unfeeling—rather than its true, spiritual self. The influence of Maya fosters attachment, fear, and suffering, making the soul feel foreign in the material world. Though we are immortal, under Maya we mistakenly perceive ourselves as limited bodies destined to perish.

Jiva Shakti: The Soul Between Two Worlds

The third energy is Jiva Shakti, the intermediary energy of the soul. Positioned between spiritual and material energies, the soul experiences the tension and opportunity of free will. We can choose to align with the illumination of spiritual energy or the delusion of material energy. Like a shoreline where land meets water, the soul can dwell in consciousness or become immersed in illusion. Through conscious alignment with Bhakti, the soul gradually transcends the influence of Maya, freeing itself from suffering and karmic limitations.

Choosing Love Over Illusion

The soul’s alignment determines its personality and experience. Interacting with material energy creates a temporary, material identity, while interaction with spiritual energy cultivates a spiritual personality. By consistently engaging with Bhakti, we weaken Maya’s influence and come under the shelter of divine love. This connection liberates us from the cycles of time, karma, and the gunas of material nature.

Ultimately, we are not merely surrounded by energy—we are energy. As conscious sparks of the Divine, we are free to choose between illusion and love. Our home, happiness, and true identity lie in the spiritual realm, while material energy offers temporary distraction and suffering. Recognizing this, we can gradually anchor ourselves in divine consciousness and cultivate lasting joy.

Reflection and Invitation

Consider your daily choices: which energy are you aligning with—illusion that obscures, or illumination that awakens love? By observing our patterns and engaging with Bhakti practices, we can reconnect with our eternal nature and embrace a life of spiritual fulfillment.

In the next episode, we will explore how Vedanta suggests breaking free from time, karma, and the gunas, revealing the path to liberation and conscious living.

Until then, remain open and curious, seeing yourself and others as the spiritual beings at the heart of all experience. S,em>vasty astu visvasya: may there be good fortune throughout the universe and for you.
